GOLD: Georgetown Opportunities for Leadership Development

August 18-23, 2018

Leadership and Beyond (L&B) is a student-led mentorship program that examines and develops students’ personal leadership style, while introducing them to life at Georgetown. The program is run by Georgetown Opportunities for Leadership Development (GOLD), a student-led organization housed under the Center for Student Engagement (CSE). At only 32 participants, L&B provides the opportunity for personalized, one-on-one engagement with campus leaders. We look for a well-rounded and diverse team and we encourage anyone to apply, regardless of previous formalized leadership experience.

The program focuses on the ways in which leadership can be thought about, reflected upon, and most importantly, practiced here at Georgetown and after your college experience. Students will explore leadership through a variety of activities that are guided by the Servant Leadership Model. They learn skills such as conceptualization, group dynamics, reflection, risk taking, stewardship, and community building. During the program, students will apply these and other skills to engagement with the DC community through a service project, as well as in future leadership positions.

Participants are paired with undergraduate mentors who have experienced Georgetown as active student leaders. The mentor to participant ratio is 1:4, thus providing ample opportunity for students to interact with their mentors, exchange ideas, and form close bonds. L&B also features Georgetown faculty members and community leaders who, along with mentors, are committed to guiding students through their leadership development in a variety of ways during the program.

Each experience, both during the program and during the participant's time at Georgetown, addresses a different leadership-related topic, which reinforces the community developed during L&B. The “beyond” component of L&B works to further develop the leadership styles of participants during the school year, and can include opportunities for speakers, panels, workshops, community service, and social opportunities.

There is no fee for L&B; meals and housing will be provided.
