August 20-25, 2017
Welcome to the Hilltop! We hope that you will consider beginning your Georgetown experience with FOCI— Georgetown’s longest running pre-orientation program, currently in its 32nd year. Spend six days with the Center for Social Justice, 54 of your fellow first-year and transfer students and us—your committed student leader team.
Discover the diverse populations, perspectives and issues that comprise the Georgetown and Washington D.C. community. FOCI serves as an introduction to community service, volunteer activism and social justice issues at Georgetown, in D.C. and beyond. FOCI activities address a wide variety of social justice issues, including education, sustainability, gentrification, immigration, LGBTQ access, and hunger and homelessness. We also facilitate lively discussions with Jesuits, faculty, student leaders and other notable speakers.
Engage with your new community through a series of projects and discussions aimed at developing “Hoyas for others”. We will help you link your interests with the resources available at Georgetown. FOCI will also introduce you to a diverse, open, passionate group of students and allow you to develop a network of meaningful relationships that extends long after the week is over.
Reflect on your experiences and the role that you hope to play at Georgetown and beyond. As a Jesuit University, Georgetown is deeply committed to the belief that service can and should play an integral role in your education. With this ideal in mind, you will critically examine themes of social justice, strengthen your capacity for leadership and become part of a community committed to personal growth through service and reflection.
FOCI provides housing and meals for all participants at no cost. Previous experience with social justice issues and community service is not a requisite to apply. We hope that regardless of your prior experience, FOCI will be an opportunity for you to enter the social justice community at Georgetown and begin to make a difference. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. To learn more, please visit our website.
There is no fee for FOCI; meals and housing will be provided.
The application will open in May.
