Congratulations to our newly admitted Georgetown students! We look forward to orienting you this summer to life on the Hilltop. Fall New Student Orientation (NSO) officially begins Saturday, August 25, 2018 at the Welcome Session and continues until the first day of classes, Wednesday, August 29, 2018. Whether you are a freshman, transfer, or international student, NSO is an exciting experience where you prepare for your four years on-campus, meet current students, staff, and faculty, and establish connections with other new students.
Make sure to sign up for NSO by August 13, 2018 in order to be entered into the lottery for Convocation tickets!
Signature Events During NSO
PLURALISM IN ACTION
Pluralism in Action is a program designed to help incoming students explore issues of race, class, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and national origin that arise when attending a diverse institution. The goal of the program is not only to help you feel comfortable in an environment that includes individuals different from yourself, but also to learn to celebrate those differences.
Pluralism in Action consists of a performance followed by a discussion. The goal of the discussion is to encourage students to see similarities among them- selves while respecting and celebrating differences. You and your fellow students will play a vital role in creating an inclusive community — an important part of Georgetown's past and present.
NSO ACADEMIC CONVOCATION
Designed as your formal initiation into the academic community at Georgetown, the Academic Convocation will introduce you and your family to key elements of Georgetown's history and symbols. You will experience the University's traditions, such as academic regalia and the Alma Mater, and we will share our founding values and commitments, including the Honor Pledge.
In addition to hearing from student and faculty speakers, all newly enrolled students will don robes to signal their formal entry into the community of scholars. These same robes, with the addition of hoods, will later serve as your graduation gowns. Convocation is mandatory for new students. Two guest tickets will be provided per student. Ticketed seating will be in the McDonough Arena and extend to a tent outside where the ceremony will be broadcast. All students and family members are welcome to join the faculty for lunch on the front lawns following Convocation. Look for more specific information in your Welcome Packet when you arrive for NSO.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in the academic convocation choir or orchestra ensembles. Benefits include an introduction to the music program at Georgetown, the ability to meet current students, and the opportunity to move into your dorm early before the rush of returning students. In order to participate, please fill out a performing arts interest form for the Department of Performing Arts by June 29, 2018.
MARINO WRITERS' WORKSHOP
The Marino Family International Writers' Academic Workshop is your first introduction to the challenges and rewards of the University's intellectual life of the mind.
Over the coming summer, you are required to read a selected novel by an international author. This year's selection will be announced later this Spring. After reading the book, you will write a short reflection paper in response to it. Then, on the Monday of New Student Orientation, you will attend a lecture by the author, with plenty of time for you to ask questions about the book and the writing process. After the lecture, you will meet with your orientation group and other students in a discussion section led by a faculty or staff member.
The due date for the assignment is August 1, 2018, and you will submit it via Georgetown's coursework software, Blackboard. You will receive an email notification when you may submit your assignment. We know the summer prior to move-in is hectic, so we recommend allowing plenty of time to read and write your reflection paper.
